The only fauna in the world

Shelter for the famous lemurs
The Andasibe Mantadia National Park was created in 1989 and covers 15,480 hectares, most of which is covered with a dense evergreen moist forest. It is known that the most diverse species of lemurs live here (14 day and night species), including the legendary Indri Indri, the mysterious Ai-Ai, the famous Varecia variegata, etc.

Countless harmless and charming animals

To date, 51 species of reptiles, 84 species of amphibians, 72 species of mammals, 117 species of birds and countless insectivorous bats have been registered. Mantadia is one of the best bird watching spots on the Big Island. Do not forget your camera!

Very rich primary forest
It is estimated that 80% of the forest in this park was not affected by humans. It presents a wide variety of species of lemurs, chameleons, birds, as well as orchids, pandans and ferns.

The largest of lemurs
In the Andasibe Mantadia National Park is the world’s largest lemur Indri Indri. It is a full-size stuffed animal (80 centimeters) that lives on trees and feeds on leaves. Indri Indri is one of the most fascinating lemurs. With his beautiful black and white fur, you will see that he is contemplating you from a 3 meter chest, with large round eyes. It will be the joy of the smallest if you travel with the whole family.

In the morning you will hear Indri “singing” in the forest. To warn of his presence and mark the territory, the lemur emits long cries that can be heard for several kilometers. We can hear how they call each other.

Exceptional flora

Gorgeous and amazing plant species

This protected area with lush and green vegetation contains a collection of evergreens: epiphytic plants (plants living on other plants), mosses, ferns, bamboo, palm trees, deciduous and precious forests, pandanus and grapes. This park is also known for its orchids with 120 inventory species, fully endemic. They bloom from September to January.

Vegetation is abundant in water
In the park there is a sacred lake, a natural pool and an impressive sacred waterfall. It is also crossed by important rivers. The Vojitra River provides the Andekalek hydroelectric dam, the capital and nearby energy sources. Let’s not forget that we are here in the eastern rainforest!
