The most amazing and unique fairytale island, which is located just 15 km from Madagascar, is called Nosy Be. This island is of volcanic origin and is the largest among other islands (an area of 312 km2). It is surrounded by several small picturesque islands on which the famous Madagascar lemurs live.
Nosy Be Island – the most popular beach in Madagascar, offers all the necessary ingredients: soft white sand, turquoise waters and wonderful seafood. A paradise for practicing water sports with a sunny climate for most of the year, diving is the best draw, and there is a lot of swimming, snorkeling, sailing and fishing. This is the best place in Madagascar where you can go diving and fishing. Huge yellow-tailed tuna and barracudas are regulars of the local waters.
This island is unique in that it has preserved untouched wild nature and the local population is so harmoniously flowing in its pristine way of life into nature that you will feel the full flavor of these people, their culture and ancient customs. Perhaps that’s why Nosy Be is called the island of lemurs, since the animals here are not at all afraid of people, merge with nature and feel very comfortable. Lemurs jump on people’s shoulders, let them in and eat with their hands. This is an amazing sight, especially since these amazing and rare animals can only be found in Madagascar. Tourists from all over the world come here to enjoy the unique color and untouched nature of this wonderful island.
The history of Nosy Be is associated with many legends about pirates who (around the sixteenth century) hid looted treasures on this island. And also many ships with jewelry crashed near these places. This is still of great interest to tourists. For example, one of the attractions of this island is a Portuguese fortress and, according to legend, a pirate treasure is buried in its ruins. You can also visit other sights of the island, such as a memorial stele in honor of the dead Russian sailors and buried in this place at the beginning of the twentieth century. It will be very interesting to see the remains of an old prison in the town of Andoani (or Elville), which have been preserved since the time of French rule. You can still see the ruins of Maradok on the coast. These are the remains of buildings of the 17-18 centuries. Presumably built by sailors from India who escaped after the crash.
On the island you can visit such interesting places as the Lukube Nature Reserve, where rare lemurs live, as well as visit the native village and one of the most beautiful waterfalls on the island and the highest (fall height 200 meters) – Sakaleuna Falls.
Interesting facts that the soil is the best on this island and the largest plantations of Madagascar are here. This allows you to grow coffee and exotic ylang-ylang, from which perfumery cosmetic oil is made. The aromas of this beautiful flower, as well as coffee, vanilla and sugar cane spread throughout the island and this pleasantly surprises the smell of tourists.
On the island of Nosy Be there are many diverse hills that lead to Mount Locone and Passo. From these high points you have a magnificent view of the Nosy Be Bay. There are also eleven volcanic lakes on the island that provide huge freshwater reserves for the local population and for crops.
